How to Make Your Own Lunchables

So, a few months back, a widely-reported news story about how Lunchables will probably kill you. I was horrified after reading that story since I’ve always given Bear Lunchables for his weekly lunch. Well, since that’s been out of the question, I’ve been making homemade lunchables for Bear for the better part of the year.

And I must say, I should’ve done this sooner.

Not only does Bear get to choose the type of lunchables he wants in his lunch bag, I also realized it was ultimately healthier for him since I know exactly what he’s eating and how many calories, sodium, and etc he’s ultimately consuming.

And now I’m going to show you how to do it and how it’ll save you a ton of money in the long run!

LFG!

Step 1: Choose the right type of bread (if applicable).

I don’t eat a lot of bread, despite how much I love it. However, Bear being a growing child, needs some with his sandwiches. I typically choose either a hoagie bread roll or just plain wheat bread (I try to avoid white bread whenever possible. This is an important step because the right type of bread will ultimately determine if your child will even eat the sandwich.

If your child doesn’t like bread, you also choose crackers in place of it.

Step 2: Choose the right type of meat.

I tend to get meat straight from the deli counter, but if that is not an option, I choose a high-quality meat if possible. While Boar’s Head used to be my go-to choice until, they too, were putting out some danger to the public, I go for Appplegate Farms. If I’m in a pinch, I go for Oscar Meyer. Again, it’s about options and also, convenience.

Step 3: Pick the cheese

Bear loves just plain American or sometimes Colby cheese. I usually put it on his sandwich or if it he wants it separately, I cut it up and put it in a plastic bag. I usually go for store brand. Very simple.

Step 4: Pick the fruit and/or veggies.

Sometimes, I skip this part. But if I do include fruit, I choose something simple and easy to eat – cut-up grapes, sliced strawberries or blackberries, and small slices of celery.

Step 5: Pack a small drink.

While Bear usually has his water bottle with him during the day, I also include another small drink for him. Sometimes, it’s a Capri Sun or an Organics drink. Just something small that can be included.

Step 6: Pack a little candy (optional).

I usually include some gummy worms or fruit snacks. Something not too much.

I should note this is typically a lunch Bear snack on throughout the day and not something he finishes all at lunch. But that’s the point – I don’t want him to be hungry all day.

And for lunchbox ideas, I highly recommend Bento Box (still have ours!) and this pretty cool lunch bag.

How do you make your lunchables? Sound off in the comments!
